News - Global Action Week

Watch out for Global Action Week somewhere close to you!

It's less than 2 weeks to go until this year's exciting GCE Global Action Week (24-30th April).   This year the week is particularly timely, due to recent exciting events.

As some of you may be aware from recent global media coverage on 10th April the UK Chancellor Gordon Brown announced a total of $15 billion until 2015 in aid to education from the UK government, The Global Campaign for Education (GCE) welcomed Chancellor Brown's announcement and commitment but it must be recognized that this is not "new" money; it is only a restatement of the G8 Gleneagles money with a focus on education. So even though the media coverage has given a welcome boost to the GCE campaign we should also not forget that on current rates of progress, children from poor countries will wait another 150 years to enter the school gate so your hard work in support of the 'Every Child Needs A Teacher' campaign is as relevant now as in past years.

This year's theme firmly places teachers in the centre of the fight to get every child into school and receiving a quality education. The on-going activities of GCE coalitions worldwide in the run up to the Global Action Week are so exciting and inspiring and the leaders cannot fail to hear the evidence and the messages around: 'Every Child Needs A Teacher'!

Events during the week are similar in many countries that are collecting evidence and research on the lack of teachers, and presenting these to officials at 'Big Hearings' that will bring education to ministers   attention.  Politicians and officals are also returning back to school to see and experience school conditions first hand.

Brazil
Across the country children, teachers, and campaigners are finding out what it means to be the 'ideal teacher'.   Involving vast numbers of people, the information will be compiled into dossiers and presented at 'big hearings' that are taking place all over the country in parliament buildings.   The country-wide 'big hearing' will take place on the 26th April. The radio is covering Action Week activities and teacher's stories on a daily basis.   To find out more contact:

Burundi
Following the recent success of dropping school fees in Burundi - campaigners are focusing in areas where there are particularly large class sizes, to demand the need for more teachers.   A day of reflection will bring together all the opinions of teachers and students as they are presented to the government authorities.   A national demonstration is taking place on the 24th April outside the parliament – so that no politician can continue forget their promises on quality education.   And just incase this is not enough, officals are also going back to school – where they will see the lack of teachers, and will be asked to pledge more action to give every child the teacher they deserve.

Canada
Samia's New School is a story that explains what it's like to go to school in Africa, to young children in Canada (grade 3-6).  The World's Largest Poster for Education is being made by school children's artwork, and education messages, from all over the country.   As a donor country, children and students of all ages are writing to their MPs, the Prime Minister and the Minister of International Cooperation – asking them to commit more to education in poor countries.

Indonesia
Fifteen provinces are involved in Global Campaign for Education activities over the whole month f April, collecting dossiers (stories about the lack of teachers), politicians and ministers are going back to school, and the local government are participating in a big hearing on education.   Huge public rallies, photographic and art exhibitions will raise mass awareness on the need for more, better respected, and better paid teachers.  The National Big Hearing is when all the campaign evidence and work will be brought to the central government and officials will be reminded of their previous pledges to education and asked for more immediate action.

Macedonia
Campaigners of all ages are marching for teachers in towns across Macedonia.  The National Big hearing is being aired on broadcast TV so that children's voices for more better quality teachers will be heard across the country.   A children's party is taking place at the end of the week in which children will be awarded and given prizes for their evidence, stories, and pictures that they've collected on teachers.

Malawi
Many politicians, celebrities, and influential people are returning to school during Global Action Week.   Not only will they experience school conditions and the lack of teachers but they'll hear stories, and be given evidence about the lack of teachers.   The Case for Teachers is being presented at a public 'big hearing'.  Government officials are not only taking place but will be demanded to invest more into education, and immediately provide more quality teachers, for quality education.

UK
Global Action Week is launch a three month education campaign in the UK.  Following the success of the 'Send My Friend to School' challenge, the UK has adopted the slogon 'My Friend Needs a Teacher' for 2006.  Across the country schools are making cut-out teaches that represent the 15 million more teachers the world needs.   These will be compiled to form one giant cut-out teacher to be displayed in central London.  If walking past this is not enough to remind the government of education commitments, MPs are also going back to school to listen and receive messages from children about education around the world.
