Summary:
Campaigners in Armenia staged a compelling exhibition of the effects of depriving people an education. About 50 schools from various regions, towns and villages participated in the Global Action Week. At least 4093 people participated in the various activities which were staged and among the main activities were the forming of the human chain around schools on April 26, collecting evidence on the right to education, making paper cut-outs, and staging and discussing a play “My Friend Neso” which was written by popular Armenian writer Hovhannes Tumanyan. The play tells the story of the writer's friend who was deprived of education because of poor living conditions.
In addition, several schools joined together and made a march towards the historical monument of "Sardarapat". On April 27, a further human chain was formed around the Culture Palace in Vanadzor Town. The Armenian campaign succeeded in getting a wide range of participants in its activities and this was evidenced by its public hearings activity held at the United Nations office in the capital Yerevan. In attendance was the UNICEF Representative in Armenia Sheldon Yett who addressed the masses on the importance of education, the UNDP "Human Development National Report" team leader, representatives from the Ministry of Education and Science, National Institute of Education, Oxfam GB, UN DPI, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Human Rights Division, NGOs, school headmasters, teachers and the Mass Media.
During this event teachers made exciting presentations on the work done at their schools during the Global Action Week. The invited guests were touched by the teachers' moving stories about children who were deprived of education and about Global Action Week. The Armenian government will receive paper chains with messages and wished from children around the country.
