Summary:

Canada is putting the finishing touches on a curriculum package with 12 activities which will be disseminated to elementary teachers across Canada. The Coalition also has a meeting planned to discuss any further actions for GAW and these will be shared with other coalitions as soon as possible.
6 February 2008

The campaign in Canada focused on children presenting their research findings on the right to education. At Manor Park Public School, about 600 students from grades 1-6 participated in the launch of Global Action Week after weeks of learning about the right to education. A selection of students from grades 4, 5 and 6 presented statements about the right to education based on their research. Students then unwound a huge paper chain that stretched around all four walls of the school gymnasium. Every student in the school had contributed to the paper chain as a sign of solidarity. With children around the world.

The occasion was graced by the President of Education International Africa Region and General Secretary of the Ghanaian Teachers’ Association, Irene Adanusa. She spoke about the state of education in Ghana and the activities students in Ghana were engaged in to commemorate Global Action Week.

Canadian campaigners also collected paper chains which they intend to give to the Prime Minister before the G8 Summit.

Students also made some reflections.
"To me, it's very important for children to have an education. I want their dreams to come true. I want them to have a future! I hope the people from richer countries feel the same way and do something about it. Families in poor countries need the money to survive. If their children have an education they might become teachers and help their families. It's important for everyone to have an education!"-Laily Popal

"Why is education important? Why can't people just "live" without it? Because without an education, you never know what the future holds for you. Drugs, alcohol, things that sometimes lead to even...DEATH! A lot of people have made promises, but why haven't these promises been made? Doesn't everyone deserve an education? Some children must work hard to support their families when they should be in school learning. But why are these things happening? Over 18 million teachers are needed so that EVERY SINGLE child gets an education. But we cannot do it alone. You must help. So go ahead, and save a life." -Matouga Mohamed

"Education is important for all children because there are over 1 million children that have dreams of becoming doctors, dentists, firemen, policemen and lots of other lifesaving professions. These children can make a difference in the future. All children have a right to get educated. One day you will realize that you made the right choice and maybe they might help you!" -Ibrahim Matar

"Why is education important for all the children in the world to have? Well, education is one of the most important things to have in the world. If you don't have an education, it will be even harder to be what you want to be, and do what you want to do. My school, Manor Park, had an assembly about global education. We invited some people to come and talk to us about global education. Amazingly, we had a lady come all the way from Ghana to talk about it! For example, she stated how Africa does not have enough qualified teachers for all the children, as well as the fact that they don't have enough schools. If everyone in the world could hear something like this, it would have a huge impact on the understanding of the importance of global education." -Simon Mertick

We had a great launch last week at a local elementary school.  Details can be found at http://www.campaignforeducationcanada.org/en/files/Launch%20update.doc.

Our coalition also met last week with the President of CIDA, which was very positive.  He will be attending the May 2 meeting, but will not be making any announcements.  He agreed to our request that we hold regular civil society consultations with CIDA Education staff, which is exciting.

In addition to the work going on in classrooms across the country, other GAW events include:

April 16, 2007    The Canadian Teachers' Federation and CGCE hosted their annual Global Action Week Breakfast with Parliamentarians. CTF Board members, CGCE Steering Committee members, and CIDA representatives joined Parliamentarians for this event. Irene Adanusa, General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers and President of the Education International Africa Region addressed the participants on the theme of Education as a Human Right. A presentation of students' chains was made to a delegate from CIDA.

April 23, 2007    Save the Children Canada will host a forum entitled "Education: A Casualty of War or of Donor Indifference?" Invited speakers will lead a stimulating discussion from diverse perspectives on how donors are failing children in need of education in conflict-affected fragile states.

April 30, 2007    The CGCE and CIDA will host a Research Roundtable highlighting recent development on Civil Society, Aid Effectiveness and Education in Ottawa.  Speakers include Rakesh Rajani from HakiElimu, a civil society organization in Tanzania, Dr. Karen Mundy of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, Brian Tomlinson from the Canadian Council for International Cooperation, and Real Lavergne of CIDA.
