Summary:
Despite taking off late owing to the General election in Nigeria, Action week took off to a resounding start. The Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA) along with Action-Aid participated in a series of events including a colourful Fun Walk from starting at the Federal Ministry of Education headquarters and terminating at the National Centre for Women Development. The walk attracted persons from stakeholder organizations in education, including the Minister of Education Sayyadi Abba Ruma and Minister of State in the Ministry Adewunmi Abitoye and heads of different agencies with responsibility for education.
This was followed by a roundtable on the theme "Education as a Human Right" inside the expansive auditorium of the Centre, where the audience was woven into a human chain. The agenda included speeches by both the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education and the Minister, as well as goodwill messages from international development partners, civil society groups and bilateral agencies. The audience discussed the importance of a rights-based approach to education. Policy makers at all levels were challenged to keep the flame for the right to education burning.
The highlight of the day was the "Intervention by students" session of the programme, where pupils from different schools, including those physically challenged, as well as adult learners, contributed their views on the theme "Education as a Human Right." To cap it all papers were presented by the Executive secretary of UBEC, Lami Amodu, and Professor Victor Owhotu of the Faculty of Education, University of Lagos.
