What's happening in 2008:
The National Coalition is now working hard to make sure the campaign takes place in all the 13 regions. The national highlight World’s Biggest Lesson will take place in Koudougou, the home province of the Prime Minister, and is expected to be attended by 1,500 people including politicians, officials teachers, students and community leaders. Excitingly both the Prime Minister M. Zongo Tertus and the Minister of Education look set to attend. And above this the World’s Biggest Lesson is taking place in 13 schools across the country with the Regional Governor attending each one.
What happened in 2007?
Once again Action Week proved to be a hive of activity. More than 60,000 people took part in more than 10 regions. Many more people will have heard about the campaign as the right to free equitable education got debated on TV, radio and in conferences.
During a commemoration event campaigners delivered messages in the form of personal testimonies to political and customary officials. Politicians then promised to: make free education available, to relieve the heavy burden on families, to increase the allocation to education from 12% to 20% of the national budget, to prioritise girls and people with disabilities and to improve teacher conditions.
Finally the National EFA coalition’s statement was handed down a human chain, that stretched half a kilometre between the Ministry of Education and Parliament in the capital Ouagadougou, and given to the President of the Northern Regional Committee.
