What happened in Action Week 2009? The Big Read Action Week ambassador is an international boxing star, who is a woman and who has now decided to go back to school. Esther Phiri is also the literacy ambassador in Zambia, where she encourages people of all ages to go back to school. On Thursday, May 21, 2009, Christian Children’s Fund Zambia joined the rest of the world in commemorating Global Action Week. The celebrations under the theme “Youth and Adult Literacy and lifelong Learning” were held at Kasalu Basic school in Mumbwa district. The event was officiated by the Ministry of Education Director for Human Resource and Administration, Mr. Andrew Phiri who stood in for the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education. Approximately 500 pupils and 20 teachers participated in the event.
This year’s commemoration event was characterized by various activities such as The Reading Corner, Match past, poems, drama/dance, testimonies from community members, dialogue sessions and speeches on the theme. To mark the beginning of the event, three children from Kasalu Basic School read stories to the crowd. Two children read in English while the remaining one read a story in Tonga. This activity was to show people why it is important for children to be literate as they are the future leaders of tomorrow.

What happened in Action Week 2008? What happened 2008?Action Week launched with a parade to Lusaka Boys High School where politicians and students made speeches and performances in support of education.
The celebrations had wide media coverage including all the main radio stations and community radio stations in selected districts and ZNBC on television. A documentary on Children with Special Education Needs (CSEN) which was broadcast on national television was produced.
The Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) lobbied politicians to improve conditions in Munali High School, a school for children with special needs and Cosmas Mukuka, the General Secretary of BETUZ was featured on popular radio show, ‘Let the People Talk’.

What happened in Action Week 2007?
The mass JOIN UP event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Education, who promised to establish a higher authority to monitor education standards in the country.
Children from disadvantaged communities, teachers and parents walked 5km with banners demanding Quality Education in Zambia. Throughout the week there were radio discussions on education and the public had the opportunity to call and air their views on Education Rights.
The calls were echoed by the coalition who put heavy demands on the government to prioritize steps for education rights.
