Dear Friend of GCE

We are pleased to introduce GCE's first newsletter since the election of GCE's new board. GCE's 4th General Assembly was held in Paris last month, bringing together more than 200 campaigners and members to review our past collective work and determine the future alignment and campaign strategy. The new board was elected as follows: Camilla Croso (President), Monique Fouilhoux (Chair), Jennifer Chiwela (Vice President: ), Maria Khan (Vice Chair), Bright Appiah, David Archer, Rasheda Choudhury, Alberto Croce, Helle Gudmandsen, Elie Jouen, Assibi Napoe, Refaat Sabbah, Imad Sabi and Kailash Satyarthi

With the General Assembly past all eyes now turn to Global Action Week. Efforts already kicked off during International Women's Day in many countries. We look forward to working together towards a fruitful and impactful week that calls for gender equality, so that girls and women are able to fully enjoy the right to education, considering it must be available, accessible, acceptable and adaptable to them all.

We hope you enjoy the newsletter, and look forward to hearing more from you Best wishes,

Camilla Croso (GCE President) and Monique Fouilhoux (GCE Chair)

Action Week: Women & Girls Education
2_nl_gawWe now have two weeks to go to Global Action Week 2011! With women and girls still making up the majority of people not receiving a quality education – this year's action week is putting women and girls education in the limelight. People are uniting by doing the same action of story telling – both sharing stories around the world, and locally of the importance of education for all. We all have our stories, no matter what our education experience, and the experience of telling stories is one of the most powerful tools in sharing knowledge.

The GAW website, being our most exciting and interactive one yet, not only allows people to share stories from around the world but also allow people to literally browse the world map to read them. There are three different categories for signing up – individuals, organizers/teachers and for coalitions.

Real World Strategies
3_nl_rws15th - 17th March: Representatives from the Dutch Ministry (DGIS), EI and GCE visited Mali to experience the work of the Coalition. All visitors left excited after meeting some very important stakeholders such as representatives from the teachers union and the ILO, the Education Specialist at the Dutch Embassy, the Permanent Secretary of Education, teachers and students. Through these meetings, it became evident how strong the collaboration is between unions and other members of the Coalition, how fruitful a critical but open relationship is with a key donor in the country and how the Coalition members can take advantage of the creative tension between themselves and the government. At the end of the visit a discussion was held about sustaining this important work of the Coalition.

The Report about the Assessment of our RWS work (2005-2010) is ready and was distributed at the Global Meeting for CSEF Coalitions. An Executive Summary of the Report in these languages is also available on our website. The report underlines the fundamental importance of efforts carried out by national coalitions through RWS and their impact in policy decision making.

Farewell to Michelle Dixon
It's with regret that GCE says farewell to Michelle Dixon who has been the campaigns International Campaigns Advisor for three years. Michelle has led some excellent work for GCE, supported northern coalitions, the development of Class of 2015, and 1GOAL efforts. Whilst we are sad to see her go, we're also excited for her to take on a new exciting opportunity as mobilization director at the Climate Action Network. We wish her the best and know that she'll exceed in this new role.
