Jul 2010 The United Nations (UN) last month issued a report on the progress made toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. The report highlights that huge strides have been made in enrolling children, particularly girls, in primary school, showing that enrolment in primary education has reached 86 percent in the developing world.
However, the goal of all boys and girls completing a full course of primary schooling by 2015 will not be met, because a necessary pre-requisite of this education goal, that of having all children eligible for entry into primary school enrolled by 2009, was also not achieved.
Likewise, equal access to education for girls remains elusive, and the goal of eliminating gender disparity in all levels of education by 2015 will not be reached. The report, however, also emphasizes that the gender gap in the out-of-school population has narrowed: the share of girls in this group decreased from 57 percent to 53 percent globally between 1999 and 2008.
