On 18 April 2011, the Supreme Court cited the Fundamental Rights of the children; especially the rights conferred upon them under Article 21 of the Constitution (right to life with dignity) and directed the Union Government at the Center to issue suitable notification for the prohibition of children in Indian circuses. The Apex Court also directed the Government to conduct raids to rescue children working in circuses. The Court further directed the Ministries of Human Resource Development and Women & Children Development to prepare a scheme for rehabilitation of the rescued children. The Court said that the Government will have to file compliance reports before 19 June, 2011.
