Ghana: Education Coalition Calls for an End to Exclusion
What happened in 2007?
Students and teachers alike got stuck into the Action Week activities taking part in painting competitions, poetry and drama sessions and doing a big walk through the streets of Accra, where they sang songs for education. The week’s activities were well covered in the media, and were attended by government officials, who reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment towards education for all by 2015.
In 2007, GNECC organized a set of activities against the GAW theme “Join Up for Education Rights Now”. The key activities for 2007 included radio and TV discussions to raise awareness on the theme of education as a human right, focusing on access and quality, as well as the publication of national GAW posters with the same intent. A national press launch was also held which saw the attendance of over 34 media practitioners and 23 members of civil society organizations in Ghana that culminated in a 2 hour interaction between educationalists and the press. A community durbar in the Ankamu district was held two days later which had government officials visiting a school in the district and hearing about the findings conducted by GNECC on why 15 schools scored zero percent in the BECE. The biggest event was the “Big Chain Re-action”, a procession of over 600 people from all different walks of life who walked through downtown Accra to present a research file to the Rt. Honourable Minister of Parliament, Hon. Minister of Education. Science, and Sports, and Hon. Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs.
