What's happening in 2008:

A number of exciting activities have been lined up for Malawi.

The coalition has organized a national launch to be graced by the Deputy Minister of Education Ms Olive Masanza. After the national launch, the Coalition will hold public debates in at least 6 districts where it has district education networks.  The aim of the debates is to create awareness on why others are being excluded from education and come up with action plans on what can be done to address the situation.  Invited participants will include district educatinn officials, parliamentarians, pupils, teachers and parents.

  1. The coalition is holding a national launch of Action Week. This is to create a central event for media attention and symbolize the World's Biggest Lesson and politicians going Back to School event in the country. The Minister of Education, Finance and prominent leaders (traditional, religious) will be invited, along with the media so that it becomes a huge media event with maximum publicity. The Minister of Education and Finance will be presented with a dossier highlighting the status of education and demands from the Civil Society.

  2. Gathering of case studies – the coalition is using 2 journalists for the month of April to build a case on education. These will be interesting local stories on quality of education and exclusion. It is envisaged that the stories will be in the local media during the month of April and May so that people are put in the right perspective on the education situation in the country as well as the demands that the coalition is making to different stakeholders.

  3. Media advocacy – there shall be media advocacy in the print and electronic media on the status of education especially on Malawi's Progress on EFA based on the research report funded by OSISA in 2007 and what leaders can do to address the situation. To this end, Radio and TV jingles and documentaries will be produced and stories gathered by the 2 journalists will be regularly covered in the press. In addition, radio phone in programmes will be organized in which panelists will be leaders from different areas (politicians, traditional / community leaders, religious leaders, parents, education officials etc) on different topics on exclusion and education. Press statements on the GCE theme and civil society demands will also be produced.
  4. Production of IEC materials – posters, stickers, brochures, banners and bill boards will be produced and widely disseminated with messages on the GCE theme

What happened in 2007?

Global Action Week was launched nationally at a public rally at a football ground in Ntchisi district, Central Region, to which the Minister of Education and Vocational Training, Hon Anna Kachikho and 5,000 children turned up. The children sang, performed and wrote messages of their demands for education.  The demands included: the need for the review of Malawi’s Education Act to incorporate compulsory basic education, that the next budget allocates more to education, and for more political will to implement Education for All. The Education Minister promised to deliver the campaign demands to the President Bungu Wa Mtharika.
