What's happening in 2008:

The World’s Biggest Lesson is being organized in different cities in the Philippines. In Cotabato City, politicians, including school administrators, parents, youth groups will be part of the Lesson and to be taught by a  Valedictorian High School graduate. At the same time Women’s rights activists led by Ms Noriada of Unyphil will be promoting the week on a local radio programme by discussing the obstacles faced by girls in education. Local fact sheets on internally displaced peoples especially on children, youth and women who were not able to finish schooling, will be given out.

E-Net Philippines  will be conducting a series of discussions and events advocating for Education for All children, youth and adults in the Philippines. The World’s Biggest Lesson will be a major activity in Quezon City and the coalition will launch its “Learn without Fear” campaign to call attention to eradication of violence in schools while World Vision will share its ABK2 strategies that aim to eliminate child labor through education. The Coalition has invited Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, Congressman Del de Guzman and LGU officials to respond to an education reform agenda that will be presented by the children and community.

In the Philippines an estimated 8,000 people will take part in the World’s Biggest Lesson and Action Week activities.  The campaign activities include:
  1. Enlistment day:  Children and youth who are not in school and adults with literacy needs will be encouraged to list down their names – through the help of local organisations and coordination by the ‘barangay’ (village) government officials. These lists will then be collated and attached with education interventions to be advocated to the city and municipal mayors ahead of the local budgeting in July.  Through this action E-Net hopes to influence local government investment plans in three cities and 4 municipalities through this local data generated.

  2. In-school action: Activities will be coordinated with teachers and principals in ten elementary schools in Metro Manila to challenge practices, policies and perceptions that lead to children dropping out or being excluded from school.

  3. The World’s Biggest Lesson is taking place on the 23rd April  alongside creative activities like kite flying, hand printing, shows and a display of umbrellas with education messages, in order to maximise the atmosphere  and bring education as part of the people's agenda.  The Department of Education officials, local government officials and legislators from the Senate and House of Representatives have been invited to attend.

  4. E-Net will also campaign on the bill for inclusive education in 14th Congress alongside the bill’s sponsor – Senator Cayetano.

  5. Other activities include a mountain climbing event of out-of-school youth in the Cordillera, a conference on Indigenous Education, and a teachers' national campaign linking the current campaign for Magna Carta for Teachers to ensure quality education and many others.

What happened in 2007?

The call to, JOIN UP for Education reverberated amid the Philippines' election campaign. E-Net Philippines used the timing to their advantage, engaging in dialogue with the election candidates and presenting them with an Education for All legislative agenda. In the extreme summer heat campaigners unravelled a giant banner reading Education is a Human Right, and chanted: 'Hawak Kamay para sa Edukasyon!' Children from different schools, religions and regions, and even children not currently in school came together to take part in the Action Week events. In Quezon City children drew pictures of education and schools. In the north, children climbed the mountain Mt. Pulag in a major effort to JOIN UP for education rights. And in the south Action Week was celebrated with the 'sama di laut' or people of the sea. Finally a unique workshop was held on Mapping Education Situations of Marginalised Sectors in Rural and Urban Areas, as part of the Education Watch, Real World Strategies in Jakarta.
