rwsWhat is RWS?

Real World Strategies (RWS) – Towards Education for All by 2015 was a 5 year project (2006-2010), funded by the Dutch Government. An earlier phase of the project ran from 2003-2005.  RWS was coordinated by GCE in close cooperation with regional networks: the Asia South Pacific Association for Basic and Adult Education (ASPBAE); the Africa Network Campaign on Education for All (ANCEFA); and the Latin-American Campaign for the Right to Education (CLADE). The project funds have supported work by coalitions in 51 countries across these three regions.

What does RWS do?

The main objective of RWS was to provide structured facilitation and capacity-building support to Southern civil society groups wishing to improve the focus, coherence and creativity of their advocacy efforts to increase impact at the national level and get countries on track in achieving all the EFA goals and targets. RWS also aimed to strengthen the momentum of coordinated sub-regional/regional and global advocacy campaign action - so that these efforts mutually inform and reinforce each other for greater effectiveness and impact. The full list of RWS objectives is below:

  • To strengthen and deepen the work of existing education civil society coalitions such that they are able to mobilise public demand and concern for free quality Education For All
  • To build further education coalitions in countries and regions where none exist
  • To align the work of education coalitions with other networks, coalitions and movements
  • To deliver timebound, coherent national and regional advocacy strategies
  • To contribute to the delivery of effective global advocacy work by GCE, ensuring consistency, coherence and cross-fertilisation between national advocacy plans and regional/global strategies
  • To build broad-based movements with other interest groups, linking education interests with others working on public sector service delivery, aid, debt and children’s issues
  • To bring about specific policy changes at global, regional and national level, consistent with overall objectives of GCE Global Strategy

Why is it called ‘Real World’ strategies?

RWS deliberately adopted a context-based, demand-driven approach, so that the capacity-building support provided could work within the ‘real world’ campaign and advocacy strategies of coalitions in different countries. National education coalitions were able to use RWS support in a flexible way so that they could respond to emerging or changing advocacy opportunities.

What happens at the end of the project?

A project documentation & assessment report, commissioned in 2010, is being disseminated for sharing of best practice and lessons learned.  The report features an overall assessment plus case studies that give a flavour of the work supported through RWS.  Please click on the links to access the full report or the executive summary.
