What's happening in 2008:

Thousands of children and adults will participate in exciting activities planned for Global Action Week. GAW will be celebrated in 20 literacy schools in the capital, Honiara.  These are the most neglected and excluded schools in the country. Politicians, educationsists, teachers, family members and supporters will be part of the World’s Biggest Lesson on 23rd April.  During the week, campaigners will also have an opportunity to discuss the findings of its Educational Experience Survey. There are lots of prizes line up for different competitions.

A lesson we must all take heed of

What happened in 2007?

About 30% of children are out of school in the Solomon Islands, partly due to the high cost of schooling, and the distance to schools for rural communities. Due to the tsunami hitting the Solomon Islands on the 2nd April, Action Week did not take place as planned in April. But un-deterred campaigners managed to rally schools to get involved in June, and hold a big event in September for International Literacy Day.
