Grammy award-winning artist Shakira will be the Honorary Chairperson of GCE's Action Week in 2008.  Shakira will appear in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, April 22, with embers of Congress as well as students who are coming from across the United States to raise awareness for the bipartisan Education for All Act 2007 (EFA).

The purpose of the EFA Act is to "ensure that the U.S. provides the resources and leadership to ensure a successful international effort to provide all children with a quality basic education." It calls for $1 billion for bilateral global basic education investment for FY 2008, scaling up to $3 billion by 2012. The EFA Act requires the president to develop a comprehensive integrated strategy for the United States government to follow in working to reach the 2015 goal of universal access to education for all children.

"Universal education isn't about charity—it's about investment," said Shakira. "By providing vulnerable children with a basic education we can create a better, safer world."

Events are being held nationwide from April 21-27 as young people call upon their leaders to support education for all children, including the very poorest. Thousands of children across the US will also participate in the "World's Biggest Lesson" on April 23.

In Boulder, Colorado, Kenyan Peace Activist Karambu Ringera will lead the World's Biggest Lesson.  First to fifth graders from Creekside Elementary school will walk 6 miles (round trip) to the event in solidarity with the children who trek miles to school everyday, as well as those without the opportunity to go to school.  Participants will also sign a "World's Biggest Lesson" letter to be sent to the Prime Minister of Japan, current chair of the G8.  City Council members, State Legislators and Congressman Udall have all been invited to attend.

Students from Oregon and Palestine will do the World's Biggest Lesson together, live.  The link-up will be via video conferencing and the World's Biggest Lesson will be done in both English and Arabic.  Students of this program have shared video essays, photos, poems, and forum postings all in the hopes of breaking down barriers and learning more about each other. Now, during Action Week, they will be adding their voices to the millions of youth worldwide demanding a free, quality education for all.

What happened in 2007?

Global Action Week in the US was a star studded affair, with prominent people underscoring the importance of education. Hollywood star, Angelina Jolie attended a Global Action for Children event during Action Week to raise awareness for education for orphans and vulnerable children. US GCE Chair, Gene Sperling, also spoke on this panel. Throughout the country more than 1,000 schools in 40 states held events. Through a partnership with PBS Wide Angle, curriculum materials and DVDs were distributed to classrooms across the country. Students were also invited to Link up! through an on-line chain, to upload photos of the chains they made. Some of the really inspirational children from around the USA and other countries came to Congress and conducted over fifty briefings to officials on the importance of universal education. Former child labourers from Colombia, Ghana and India, joined GCE's president Kailash Satyarthi, in presenting their stories on Capital Hill to prominent education figures, including Ruth Kagia, Director of Education Sector Human Development Network at the World Bank.
