On this page you can learn more about why 80 million children and almost a billion adults miss
out on receiving an education.
Every child has the right to go to school. Education is essential to help children go on to get better jobs and it is crucial to reducing poverty, improving general health, stopping the spread of HIV and AIDS, and enabling people to play a full part in their communities and nations.
Education Empowers:
A single year of schooling increases a woman's wages by 10-20%.
Education Saves Lives:
Seven million cases of HIV/AIDS could be prevented in the next decade if every child received an education.
Education Builds the Future:
A child born to a literate mother is 50% more likely to survive past the age of 5 years.
Some children can't go to school because they have to work, just to buy food to survive. Others can't get to school because it's too far away. Having a disability can also stop children from going to school.
In some countries the government doesn't provide any schools at all. In other countries there aren't enough school buildings, books or even teachers.
And that's why we need your help in sending world leaders a message that they need to do more to ensure every child goes to school and to end adult illiteracy around the world.
