EDUCATION CIVIL SOCIETY LEADERS CONVENE FOR A TRANSFORMATIVE EDUCATION AGENDA
With 262 million out of school children and 781 illiterate adults, the Global Campaign for Education (GCE)’s highest governing body, the World Assembly, advances civil society’s call for free, quality, inclusive public education for all people, in particular those from excluded communities.
KATHMANDU – The 6th World Assembly of the Global Campaign for Education commences on Friday, November 16 through Sunday, November 18, under the theme “Transforming public education systems for equality, inclusion and justice”.
The World Assembly brings together over 250 civil society representatives, education campaigners and youth advocates from over 100 countries, to debate reflect and collectively plan according to an ambitious and transformative vision, committed to the full realisation of the human rights of education for all.
This years’ World Assembly GCE welcomes the United Nations Deputy Secretary General Ms Amina J Mohammed for a keynote address and discussions around the education crisis, SDG4 and the role of youth and civil society. Other special guests include Nora Fyles, Director of the Secretariat for the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI).
For the first time ever, the 6th World Assembly welcomes inputs from youth advocates. GCE organised a Youth Caucus 14-15th November to address youth challenges and discuss their visions for the future of the movement.

Not only is the movement collaboratively accelerating the public education agenda worldwide, but also influences the direction of education policy and delivery from national member country states to the highest political levels” Camilla Croso- President of Global Campaign for Education.
The World Assembly occurs at a turning point for the movement. World wide public education is in crisis. According to the UIS Statistics, 262 million children are out of school, many more attend irregularly. These alarming numbers are exacerbated by a private sector aggressively seeking to replace deficient States in the role of education provider, undermining the critical role civil society plays in holding governments to account.

The Education Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goal 4 fuels civil society’s shared vision, the realisation of the right to free, quality, inclusive public education for all. The World Assembly is the space to invigorate our efforts in addressing pressing challenges rising up against transforming society and achieving the right to education truly for all” Maria Khan, Secretary General of the Asia South Pacific Bureau for Adult Education (ASPBAE).
In a video address which will be displayed during the opening ceremony, Nobel Peace Laureate and Founder of Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation, Dr Kailash Satyarthi, the first GCE President shares his message. “We have to build a strong mass movement for education. It is not about the right to education, it is about rights through education. Every child should learn rights, justice and equality through education curriculum in schools.”
The 6th World Assembly is organised with the support of the National Coalition for Education (NCE) Nepal and ASPBAE. NCE Nepal is a national network of over 339 member organisations, working for equitable inclusive quality and lifelong learning opportunities for all in Nepal.
Over the next few days, the wide spectrum that represents the GCE movement will deliberate on policy motions, elect a new board as well as discuss campaign priorities. The years to come will bear fruit to the tangible steps forward by civil society today, to fully realise the right to education, free of discrimination, inequality and education prioritised as a progressive public policy tool.
